Built in the 1940s

Roosevelt served until his death in 1945 and Harry Truman followed. The country entered the Second World War in December 1941 and war production ended the Depression, while civilian construction was restricted for the duration. The GI Bill of 1944 and the housing shortage that followed the war started the suburban building boom.

501 places on the National Register have a construction year in the 1940s on record. They stand in 55 states and territories. Of those, 20 are National Historic Landmarks.
