Built in the 1820s

Monroe served until 1825 and John Quincy Adams followed. The Missouri Compromise of 1820 drew a line across the territories for slavery, and the Monroe Doctrine of 1823 warned Europe off the hemisphere. The Erie Canal opened in 1825 and the first American railroads were chartered at the end of the decade.

400 places on the National Register have a construction year in the 1820s on record. They stand in 34 states and territories. Of those, 34 are National Historic Landmarks.
