Built in the 1770s
The Boston Massacre in 1770 and the Boston Tea Party in 1773 hardened both sides. Fighting began at Lexington and Concord in April 1775 and the Declaration of Independence followed in July 1776. The war moved south after 1778 and building of any kind slowed while it lasted.
100 places on the National Register have a construction year in the 1770s on record. They stand in 19 states and territories. Of those, 18 are National Historic Landmarks.
Construction years come from Wikidata, matched on National Register reference number. Only plain four-digit years are counted, so a place recorded as circa or as a range is left out. Data refreshed November 02, 2026.
